May 18, 2006 - Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Guide Capt. Chris Myers East Central Florida Report

Last week. Poor weather kept me off the water all but one day. On Wednesday, I fished the
Mosquito Lagoon with Dave Haddock. We were able to find a school of big redfish in about two
feet of water. Using live pinfish, Dave landed a nice red.

Dave was kind enough to let me get in on the action. I haven’t been able to try and catch these
big fish lately as I have been helping others do so. Another live pinfish did the trick on this fish.

Clouds set in and we lost the school so we went in search of some trout. The bite was slow,
but Dave landed a couple on a Capt. Joe’s rootbeer and pink shredder.

This week, I fished the Banana River three days. The action was slow, to say the least. My
Monday charter cancelled at 4:30 am. As I was ready to fish, I went to the Banana River alone
and called Capt. Ron Presley in the late morning to join me. The big reds which are normally in
the river at this time of year have not arrived. We caught several trout and jacks near the
Canaveral locks and saw others catching the same. I poled several flats looking for reds but
only saw one. The widgeon grass has grown to the surface in thick mats in many areas of the
Banana. Fishing in this grass is difficult, if not impossible.

Wednesday, I fished the Cocoa Beach area with Ron Whetstone. The high winds kept us
confined to the canals for most of the day. Ron scored a slam with a trout, redfish and snook
on a gulp shrimp/jighead combo. Another red and several other trout came to the boat. We saw
a good number of snook but they were not eating well.

Thursday, I fished with John Cheever and his wife Janice from the Chicago area. Again, high
winds confined us to the canals and islands. We saw a fair amount of snook near the
mangrove shorelines and had one follow, but not eat, John’s jig. Only two reds were seen the
entire day and the only fish landed was one small trout. We covered miles of shoreline and
used various jigs, jerkbaits, and plugs but the fish were just not cooperating.

This weekend, I will be working the Coastal Angler Magazine Fishing Expo in Melbourne.
Sunday, I will be giving a seminar on tarpon fishing east central Florida. Admission is free on
