| Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Guide Capt. Chris Myers - Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report January 2, 2007 The fishing the last week of 2006 was not red hot but neither was the weather. Clouds and high winds combined with many areas of dirty water made sight fishing difficult. Wednesday, upon arriving at Mosquito Lagoon I was greeted with a stiff forty degree wind and whitecaps. Having been on vacation for the last week, I intended to scout a few areas for some upcoming charters. Upon arriving at my first spot, my trolling motor decided it did not want to work. I poled around in the wind for three hours and only saw four fish so I called it quits. Thursday, my wife and I got started on the Lagoon around 11. It was cloudy and breezy but much warmer than the day before. We played hide and seek with a school of black drum for a couple hours but never got a good shot at them. Julie hooked up with an oversize red that came off after several minutes. We moved to another spot and Julie quickly landed a nice red on a 3” DOA CAL tail. We saw a few spooky schools of reds that took off at high speed as we approached and that was it for the day. Friday, Brett and Pete from Maryland joined me in the Lagoon. Within the first ten minutes, Brett hooked up with two large fish, one unidentified, and one a redfish. The first one spit the hook and the redfish cut the leader near the boat. The sun came out and we got one shot at the school of black drum but did not connect before they disappeared. The next few spots I planned on going were full of boats but we finally found and empty flat holding a few reds. Brett and Pete each landed a nice red before they had to get back to Orlando for the football game. While poling off the flat, Brett tossed a gold DOA jerkbait to a couple reds in a sand hole and landed his first sight caught redfish. Sunday was warm and windy and I fished with Maurice and Modesto from Miami. Maurice hooked and lost two big drum and finally connected with a medium sized fish that came to the boat. The drum had a deformed mouth from an apparent birth defect but it did not stop him from eating a well placed crab. The wind really picked up making it impossible to stay with the school so we left in search of some easier fish. Maurice picked up a slot red on a gold DOA jerkbait and had a few more bites. Late in the day, we encountered a few reds in some very shallow water. Maurice made a few good casts but did not connect. With the holiday vacations coming to a close, the boat traffic on the Lagoon should return to normal allowing the fish to settle down and school up. This month will produce some big trout for those searching the shallow flats and able to make quick accurate casts with soft plastics. I will be giving several seminars this month. Thursday, January 4, I will be talking about winter fishing tactics for the Lagoon at Boaters World in Altamonte Springs at 6:30. Friday, January 12, I will be at the new Gander Mountain in Lake Mary at 7pm giving a class on Flats Fishing basics. Thursday, January 25 at 7pm, I will again be at Gander Mountain talking about fly fishing Mosquito Lagoon. |
